Welcome to the Daily 5 report for Monday, Nov. 24.
Nissan CEO Ivan Espinosa, already in the midst of an aggressive three-year plan to revive the struggling automaker, is thinking beyond.
"We are discussing now inside with my executive committee about the future. We already started the preparation of what you can call a next midterm plan or long-term plan," he told our Hans Greimel in a Talk from the Top interview this month.
His big question: "What do we want Nissan to be in the future?"
Espinosa is eager to cement Nissan's revival and shift into what he calls "second gear," a pivot from cost cutting and factory closures to growth based on product and technology.
Espinosa also said he has built a good relationship with Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe, restoring amity as they explore areas of possible cooperation. The rapprochement follows February's acrimonious end of merger talks between the automakers, triggered when Espinosa's predecessor Makoto Uchida balked at Honda's play for a full takeover of Nissan rather than a merger of equals.
"We've been working with them and talking with them a lot about which projects we can work on and collaborate. All that is linked to the priorities we are setting for ourselves: What do we want to do ourselves? What do we need some help with?" Espinosa said of Honda.
That's all for now. Enjoy the rest of your day. If you want to view this story on your browser, click here.
