The classic hybrid: The J-powered 1935 Auburn Speedster Even into the 1950s, one of the raciest-looking cars built in any reasonable quantity was the 1935 and '36 Auburn Speedster. And until that time, the most powerful engine in a street car remained the 265-hp Duesenberg Model J straight-eight, unveiled to the public in late 1928. While the Auburn Speedster and the Duesenberg Model J were both products of the Cord Corp., one couldn't get a Model J engine in an Auburn Speedster. But one man changed that before the horsepower output of passenger cars finally matched the power of the decades-old Model J engine. At some point before 1956, Joe Gertler, Sr. of Raceway Garage in The Bronx, N.Y., mated Auburn Speedster serial number 33736E with Model J engine J-434 to add performance that matched the Speedster's looks. With the J engine replacing the Auburn's original 150-hp supercharged 279.9-cubic-inch straight-eight, Gertler's Speedster gained an additional 115 hp. It wasn't a simple drivetrain swap, however, and several modifications had to be made to the original Speedster in order to fit the longer 420-cubic-inch Duesenberg engine and its transmission. And oh, what a combination it was — and is. |

Indianapolis, IN - Students in the automotive program at Indianapolis Public Schools' Arsenal Tech High School are restoring a 1951 Chevrolet Deluxe, a project fueled by their love for cars and aspirations for success after graduation. Supported by partnerships with organizations like Carvana and inspired by figures such as NASCAR legend Jimmie Johnson, this program exemplifies IPS's commitment to real-world learning opportunities. While working on a 73-year-old car might seem outdated, the experience is invaluable, said Dennis Bailey, of the school's two automotive instructors. |

Carlisle Auctions to bask in the sun February 7-8 at the SUN 'n FUN Expo Campus in Lakeland, Florida. CARLISLE, PA – After more than a one-year hiatus from the automotive scene in Central Florida, Carlisle Auctions is announced its return to Lakeland and the SUN 'n FUN Expo Campus in 2025. Based in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, the Carlisle Auctions team brings its brand of classic and collector car excitement back to Polk County on February 7-8, with two days of fast-paced auction fun and over 400 planned consignments. The auction starts at 10:30 AM each day and features about 200 consignments per day, including past, present, and future collector cars. There's a heavy emphasis on muscle cars, but the event also includes exotics, imports, motorcycles, street rods, rat rods, and trucks. In fact, on February 7 at approximately 1:30 PM, Carlisle Auctions will reintroduce its popular All-Truck Hour to the Lakeland gallery of buyers and sellers. For a full 60 minutes, nothing but trucks (or truck-like vehicles) will cross the block. This may also include vans and SUVs. |
