Polestar will build its next vehicle in the States
If you have trouble reading this message, view it in a browser. This week Lincoln will go all-EV in 2030, Maserati to build electric GranTurismos, Lordstown execs quit, and Rimac goes public. But first: Polestar has revealed that it will build an electric crossover in the U.S.—in South Carolina, to be exact. The EV brand, which was a Volvo tuner just a short time ago, will begin production of the Polestar 3 at a Volvo plant that came online in 2018. "Production in the USA reduces delivery times as well as the environmental impact associated with shipping vehicles around the world," said Polestar COO Dennis Nobelius. "It will even have a positive impact on the price of Polestar 3. All of this makes the brand even more competitive in the critical American sales market." The Polestar 3 was expected to take its cues from the Precept concept. The teaser image shared by Polestar does not reveal much except for a crossover profile, but it's safe to say the Polestar model will share components with Volvo offerings, if not styling, with the brand seeking to establish its own recognizable design language, as well as its own way of selling cars. Polestar plans to open 25 retail "Spaces" in the U.S., similar in scope to Tesla stores. This week Maserati showed a few glimpses of the GranTurismo and GranCabriolet, due in 2022, which will be available with battery-electric powertrains in addition to gasoline and hybrid ones. The duo should be among the first more-or-less mass-market electric coupes and cabriolets available to some buyers, alongside Tesla's new Roadster, which is expected next year, too. Starting with a new SUV that is scheduled to debut next year, Lincoln will move toward a fully electric lineup of luxury vehicles over the next decade. This isn't the first we've heard of a Lincoln electric SUV, as it was first planned as a part of a partnership with Rivian before Lincoln later clarified it would use its own platform. With a design inspired by the Zephyr Reflection concept car, the future Lincoln SUV is said to represent the brand's new design language. Spread the word: If you know someone interested in staying on top of the rapidly growing EV segment, feel free to pass this newsletter along.
