6 sub-$10k EVs for when gas runs short
F-150 EV Lightning, Subaru Solterra, Porsche Macan EV
If you have trouble reading this message, view it in a browser. This week Subaru enters the EV fray, Rivian reveals more R1T details, Porsche talks about Macan EV, Polestar to track CO2, and Hyundai confirms the GV70 EV. But first: With the debuts of several mass-market electric pickup trucks around the corner, it was about time we heard from the maker of the best-selling gas-engine vehicle in the US. Ford announced this week that it will resurrect the Lightning name for its electric F-150, due on sale next year. Among other things the F-150 Lightning is promised to be quicker than the hot-rod F-150 Lightning performance truck from the last millennium, and it will also be able to charge your home during a power outage. It will also be an important barometer of interest in the segment as a whole, catering to actual truck buyers rather than wealthy early adopters—and likely more important for Ford's EV lineup than the Mustang Mach-E. Rivian's R1T will be first to market of the coming EV pickup onslaught. The F-150 Lightning will enter production at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center next spring, by which time Tesla may or may not have its Cybertruck in production. At the moment it's Rivian's R1T electric pickup that will arrive before the F-150 Lightning, the Cybertruck, or the GMC Hummer, with deliveries of R1Ts scheduled for next month. The segment is about to become very busy. Subaru's EV will be called Solterra, arriviing in 2022. Subaru announced earlier this week that it will field its first EV in 2022. Previewed in a shadowy teaser image, the Subaru Solterra will be a compact crossover sharing a platform with the Toyota bZ4X and will likely be about the same size. It's also expected to land well south of the $50,000 mark, as will several of its competitors. The Subaru model is also promised to have all-wheel drive standard, likely pointing to a dual-motor setup, but it's still too early for details such as battery size, starting price, and range. It'll arrive in what will be a busy segment by then, with entries from Nissan, Volkswagen, and Toyota itself all arriving this year. An electric Porsche Macan will arrive in 2023 alongside a new gas-powered version, which will debut later this year. It'll be built on a new electric platform with a similar 800-volt architecture as the Taycan electric sedan, but it will have significantly more range, Porsche claims. Rivian is getting ready to kick off a national tour this summer to show its R1T pickup. Potential customers will be able to learn a lot more about it and take one for a drive. Meanwhile, the company released more information, including dimensions and equipment availability. Spread the word: If you know someone interested in staying on top of the rapidly growing EV segment, feel free to pass this newsletter along.
