Welcome to the Dec. 20 edition of the Daily 5.
This is the last Daily 5 newsletter this year, so we thought it would be fun to steer you toward some year-end stories, and also take a look at next year.
We start with our top stories of the year.
Cybercriminals sent dealerships back to a time before computers. American voters gave the White House back to the president who preceded Joe Biden. And Stellantis is trying to reverse the fallout from Carlos Tavares' cost-cutting quest. The auto industry had its own back-to-the-future trilogy in the three biggest stories of 2024, as voted by the Automotive News staff for the 72nd year. CDK Global's computer outage forced some 15,000 dealerships for weeks to write deals and schedule service appointments by hand — or simply close down, in some cases. "People these days seem to have forgotten how to use a pencil," Ed Morse Automotive Group CEO Teddy Morse said when the disruption started in mid-June.
We also asked you to weigh in on what you thought the top stories were. Donald Trump's election victory was the clear top choice. You were interested not only in the election result but also his policy plans and their potential effects on the industry. Stellantis' struggles, electric vehicle delays and CDK's outage also took some votes.
We also looked back at nameplates that went out of production. While passenger cars again dominated the list, there were some anomalies in this year's class of discontinued models, notably two full-size pickups: the Nissan Titan and the Ram 1500 Classic.
We also took stock of the 2024 sales numbers and looked forward to what 2025 sales might be.
And just because Daily 5 is taking a breather doesn't mean Automotive News stops covering the news. New "Daily Drive" episodes and videos of the interviews will air through the holiday break. In fact, the podcast's year-in-review series kicks off tomorrow, Dec. 21.
That's it for now. Daily 5 will be back Jan. 2.
Have a great holiday!
