Will BESS Be All That Useful in the Long Term? Porsche isn't the first automaker to string together dozens or hundreds of battery packs from its pre-production cars, thereby creating a battery energy storage system (BESS). In Porsche's case, this system is meant to stabilize its Leipzig plant during peak energy usage times. But in the future, Porsche sees these types of systems as being integral parts of the larger grid, with the automaker being able to sell energy to grid consumers when conditions call for it. At least in theory. But just when might these storage systems align with all the other hardware (not to mention a practical business case), allowing automakers that run them to make money just like power companies? |

Could Mazda's EZ-6 Electric Sedan Come Stateside? If you were underwhelmed by the specs of the recent Mazda MX-30 EV, then the EZ-6 sedan might make far more sense in the present day. Mazda is gearing up for the global market launch of this new electric model, expected to serve up north of 350 miles in the CLTC cycle, while also offering something the automaker calls a Level 2.5 driver assist system. The midsize sedan, seemingly aimed at the Tesla Model 3, will be produced in a joint venture with Changan, and will be offered in Europe as we found out this week. And on paper it looks like it might be a logical next step for Mazda's North American lineup. But just what are the chances of us seeing it on sale in the US? |
