Volvo Adds Bite-Sized EX30 Crossover to EV Lineup This week Volvo took the wraps off the EX30, its smallest electric SUV to date, and one that could well become its electric best seller in Europe and in North America. Set to arrive shortly after the EX90 goes on sale, the EX30 will be positioned below the XC40 in size and will also boast the smallest CO2 footprint of any Volvo model. What can buyers look forward to in the smallest Volvo EV? The EX30 will offer three powertrain choices, which will include a single-motor version with a 64.0-kWh lithium ferro phosphate battery, and a longer-range version with a 64.0-kWh NMC battery that should be good for 275 miles of range, at least in the European cycle. A dual-motor version will also be on the menu and will produce a combined 422 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque, which will allow the little Volvo to scoot from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds. "We like to say the EX30 is small yet mighty, because it delivers on everything you'd want from a Volvo but in a smaller package," said Volvo CEO Jim Rowan. "Like any Volvo, it's an outstanding product which is safe and designed around people and their needs." Tesla Reclaims EV Nürburgring Lap Record from Porsche For most of the past decade, the Tesla Model S has had all sorts of EV performance records pretty much to itself. That changed a short while ago with the arrival of the Porsche Taycan Turbo S, which took the Nürburgring lap crown from Tesla even without the help of an actual turbo underhood. Now, the record is back in Tesla's hands after a Model S Plaid equipped with a track package and a former German Formula 3 driver behind the wheel managed to shave 8 seconds off the Taycan's lap time. That's no small feat for something that weighs well over 4000 pounds, and it appears to have pulled it off with plenty of help from the track pack's carbon-ceramic brakes and lightweight wheels. Arcimoto Builds EVs for the Rest of Us By now there are plenty of electric scooters of various sizes on the market, in addition to electric bicycles that can easily rival the price of a used car. But what if you wanted something much closer to a car without the EV price tag and without some of the comforts? That's exactly what Oregon-based Arcimoto offers, having found a curious niche that's a popular vehicle category in Asia, but is only now starting to grow in popularity stateside. With 77 hp and a 105-mile range, Arcimoto's autocycles are designed to fit into that space between an EV and an electric motorcycle, offering a semi-enclosed space, three wheels, and room for cargo. And they're actually quite car-like in some respects, offering features such as heated seats. We talked to Arcimoto CEO Chris Dawson, who was a senior manager at Tesla until 2019. "Most people who work for a living can't afford today's electric cars," Dawson says. "People deserve something they can afford."
