The 2024 Polestar 3 Could Be the Smartest Car on the Road This week Polestar took the wraps off its next electric model, slated to go on sale in 2023. The Polestar 3 will truly be the brand's flagship, in both size and features, and will be joining the Polestar 2 sedan at a crucial time for the new automaker. So what can buyers expect when it lands here next year? For starters, a massive battery. The Polestar 3 gets a 111-kWh pack that will give it a range of up to 610 kilometers in the WLTP cycle in Europe, and a manufacturer-estimated 300 miles in the EPA cycle. The new sport utility will also offer plenty of power, with 489 hp and 620 lb-ft of torque on tap in standard form, with power sent to all four wheels. And those who will opt for the Performance Pack will get a noticeable bump in power. But the drivetrain is just one part of the recipe. GM Will Take On Tesla with Ultium Home Energy System One of the promises of EVs has been bi-directional charging, allowing owners to power their homes using their car's battery when needed. But the technology hasn't become truly mainstream or affordable, even for many current EV owners. GM plans to change that with the rollout of Ultium Home starting next year, timed to coincide with the arrival of the Chevrolet Silverado EV. The setup promises to be similar to Tesla's Powerwall, but GM also plans to create a whole ecosystem of hardware and software for bi-directional charging, vehicle-to-home (V2H) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) charging, and home energy storage, among other systems. The automaker plans to do the same for businesses with Ultium Commercial, and it will all be controlled by the Energy Services Cloud. "GM Energy's mission is to offer customers access to a full suite of energy products and services, including solutions beyond the vehicle, accelerating the seamless transition to an all-electric future," said Travis Hester, vice president of GM EV Growth Operations. This Is Where Honda Will Build Its American EV Hub The next Honda EV due on sale is the Prologue, developed along with GM and based on the Ultium platform, and it will have an Acura-badged sibling. After that, the Japanese automaker will be on its own when it comes to EVs. So what are Honda's plans post-Ultium? The automaker revealed this week that it plans to produce EVs here in the US, and will re-tool several plants to make it happen. It will also build battery packs stateside in a partnership with a company you've certainly heard about. Honda announced its long-term plans just a couple of days ago, placing a bet on an EV hub that will be built in the Midwest, with its own e:Architecture battery-electric platform slated to underpin new electric models due in 2026.
