How Jeep Plans to Become the Top 'Zero-Emission SUV Brand in the World' Electric Jeeps are on the way—and not just one but four of them. This week Stellantis gave the automotive world the best preview yet of Jeep's electrification plans, revealing new nameplates and designs in just about every segment in which the brand has fielded competitors. Easily the most striking new model revealed was the Jeep Recon—a boxy SUV with a number of Wrangler styling cues—and one whose looks should readily resonate with buyers. "The all-new, all-electric Jeep Recon has the capability to cross the mighty Rubicon Trail, one of the most challenging off-road trails in the US, and reach the end of the trail with enough range to drive back to town and recharge," said Christian Meunier, Jeep brand CEO. Just below it Jeep will offer the Avenger, meant to sit in the compact SUV segment, with the model due on sale in Europe in just a few months. At the other end of the size spectrum Jeep also previewed a luxury sport utility dubbed the Wagoneer S, an unusually sleek and luxury-oriented electric model. "We'll delight our customers with a premium, highly efficient SUV that is loaded with technology and high quality craftsmanship, offering 4x4 capability, high performance, rapid acceleration and a target range of 400 miles on a single charge," added Meunier. Read on to find out just when we'll see these models on sale.

Chevrolet's Equinox Goes Electric for 2024 Not to be outdone by Jeep's EV extravaganza, General Motors took the wraps off the Equinox EV this week, previewing a model we'll see next year—and the model likely to become Chevy's electric best-seller. "Chevrolet is now positioned to offer a wide array of EVs," said Scott Bell, vice president of Chevrolet. "We know truck and SUV customers better than anyone and we've channeled that insight and experience into our new EVs." Chevy plans to offer the Equinox EV in no fewer than five different trim levels, offering FWD and AWD layouts as well as a choice of battery sizes and ranges. The base model will send 210 hp and 242 lb-ft of torque to the front wheels, while the AWD model will serve up 290 hp and 346 lb-ft of torque. When it comes to range, base models will offer a minimum 250 miles, while others trims will boast more. "We are at a turning point where EVs will be the mainstream choice for the next generation of customers and Equinox EV will lead this charge for us," said Mary Barra, chair and CEO of General Motors. "With the flexibility of GM's Ultium Platform, we are bringing to market vehicles at nearly every price point and for every purpose." Read on to find out what else to expect from this model, and how much it'll cost.

Lightyear 0 Nears Production, but Who Is It For? There is no shortage of large electric sedans with appropriately massive batteries available right now, and there are plenty more on the way. But what about the other side of the economy spectrum: a sedan with a relatively small battery, but one that can squeeze out a lot of range? That's the idea behind the Lightyear 0, headed into production in Europe this fall with a 60-kWh battery underneath and a range of 625 kilometers (388 miles) in the WLTP cycle. And it could get as much as 70 kms, or 43.4 miles per day, from the sun alone. This hyper-efficient EV promises quite a bit more, but it won't be cheap and it won't be everywhere. Thankfully, the company has yet another model in the works.
