Car of the Week: 1988 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 prototype

The ZR1 Corvette destined for the crusher somehow escaped the abysmal fate and was resurrected to GM glory.

The lives of automobile manufacturers' prototypes are often short-lived. After coming to life as a test bed for design or engineering ideas (or sometimes both), the prettiest and luckiest among prototypes usually stand tall on a display stand at an auto show. After the concepts that these prototypes test become obsolete, they are almost always destroyed to prevent them from becoming corporate liabilities. Only a few have survived, and they are cherished.

Many readers are familiar with General Motors' practice of crushing many of its prototype vehicles because they are not necessarily tested to ensure they meet the requirements to be safely operated on U.S. roads. Furthermore, these prototypes are not always built to the standards required for a reasonably long service life. Such was the case with the 1988 Corvette ZR1 prototype known by its GM code of EX-5023. EX-5023 is one of two prototype ZR1s that was to be sent to the crusher with the rest of the ZR1 prototypes, but miraculously survived.

Parts & Projects: Ronnie's Old Cars & Trucks in Tennessee

Ronnie's Old Cars & Trucks in Tennessee is a maze of possibilities

Ronnie Ramsey of Newport, Tenn., began collecting junk cars and trucks when he was in his early twenties. Since then, he has amassed an amazing inventory of more than 500 vehicles, mostly from the 1940s to the 1980s. During that period, he also worked at a tire recapping shop in Newport, and did mechanic work.

We arrived at Ronnie's Old Cars & Trucks on a foggy and mild late-winter morning and spent more than five hours trekking through the yard. We accomplished viewing just 70 percent of the yard. We even skipped lunch to photograph as many vehicles as possible in the time we had, so a return trip may be warranted.

We'd Buy That: The Pinzgauer 4x4

When you need to go under, over or just through, the Austrian made Pinzgauer might just be what the doctor ordered. We'd definitely buy that!

We found this spectacular piece of machinery for sale on a Wyoming Craigslist page. We love everything about it, but we needed to do a little homework to know exactly what we were begging our wives for.

The Pinzgauer is a military 4x4 built by Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Austria. Several armies around the world used them in the 1970s and 1980s, including Austria, Switzerland. It was one of the most capable all-terrain vehicles ever made, making it an ideal candidate for rock-climbers, campers, and off-road racing. They are easy to fix. The engine is air-cooled with a pair of Zenith carbs on top. One of the cool things is that it has more than one oil pump so the engine is never starved for oil as you rock and roll over crazy terrain.
