As Old Cars celebrates 50 years we take a look at another 50-year-old, the 'Endura' nosed Poncho known as the 1971 LeMans Sport.
Chet Krause had a nose for the hobby publishing business when he started Old Cars in 1971. He had built his company on the numismatic hobby, but the coin collecting hobby slowed going into the 1970s. Chet thought about entering several hobby markets, but old-car collecting looked like it was ready to boom. Since Chet had a personal interest in old cars, especially Model T Fords, he followed his nose and it paid off.
Pontiac did the same thing in 1971, but in a different way. In 1968, the GTO had won Motor Trend magazine's coveted "Car of the Year" award for innovation. One of the 1968 GTO's new ideas was the impact-resistant Endura rubber front bumper. Those original rubber-on-steel Endura bumpers came in five colors and were tested on push trucks used at the Pontiac factory. By 1971, the GTO nose was made entirely of Endura rubber and buyers of LeMans Sport models could add the reworked GTO nose to their car for less than $75.
One of the AACA Museum's primary founders and friend to the old car hobby, William "Bill" Smith has passed away.
Bill was involved in the old car hobby from an early age, buying restoring and modifying vehicles of all types. A native of the Wilkes Barre Scranton area and a US Navy Veteran, he rose to national prominence when he became Executive Director of the Hershey, PA-based Antique Automobile Club of America, a position he held for 17 years. Under his tenure and through his leadership the Club grew in size and scope, with the formation of the AACA Museum and AACA Library and Research Center. He also served as president of all three organizations.

"Square Body" is all the rage these days. We'd love to have this '74 Chevy Cheyenne workhorse in our stable.
Fans of Chevy's C/K Series "Square Body" trucks — which are aging very well as they turn 50 and beyond — this is the kind of truck you're looking for! A one-owner baby that has obviously been very well cared for, and is for sale by the original owner!
She's a 4x4, got dual gas tanks, 350 with an automatic. Running boards, bug screen, two-tone paint .. the mustard/gold color is a bit of an acquired taste, but we can live with it. It's even got some little pinstriping accents, so you know the owner really loves this truck. He didn't just beat it into the ground.
