Will Automated Valet EV Charging Become Commonplace? If you've ever dreamed of dropping off your EV off at the entrance to the airport parking garage and just letting the car park itself and also charge itself, two companies are now working on just such a thing. Bosch and VW's software arm Cariad are now testing automated valet parking along with automated valet charging, letting robots and infrastructure handle the tasks of finding a charging station and also finding a parking spot. And a lot of tech to make this happen is already a reality today. The most difficult part, from the standpoint of hardware, isn't really the charging robots themselves but rather all the sensors inside the garage needed to communicate with an SAE Level 4 car. And taking a step back, there would first need to be enough Level 4 cars out there to make this work at scale, and all compatible with the parking infrastructure's software. And there is yet another challenge for Bosch and Cariad to solve. |
