Happy Monday, and welcome to today's edition of the Daily 5.
We begin with the Polestar 3, a new electric vehicle masking sports car aggression behind its civilized people-mover package. The dual-motor midsize crossover delivers up to 517 hp, and the car can lay down a 4.5-second 0-to-60-mph time. Christian Samson, head of Polestar's product identity team, said the Polestar 3 delivers comfort, canyon-driving agility and even occasional off-road capability. Urvaksh Karkaria has more.
From out West comes word that General Motors' self-driving subsidiary Cruise is getting ready to return to autonomous driving in its California home. The company said Sept. 19 it has started manual driving in the Bay Area. Humans are now operating Cruise vehicles that collect data to build maps of public roads. It marks the first time Cruise vehicles have operated in the state in any way since one of the company's robotaxis ran over a pedestrian in October 2023.
Meanwhile, the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act advanced after a vote by a panel of U.S. House lawmakers Sept. 18. The bill, reported to the Senate in September 2023, requires the Department of Transportation to mandate that all new passenger vehicles include devices for accessing AM broadcast stations. That could be good news for AM radio fans, however, such a mandate would pose challenges for automakers producing EVs, as the electromagnetics can interfere with radio signals.
