Welcome to today's edition of the Daily 5.
Elon Musk's political contradictions will be on full display tonight as he hosts Donald Trump for a live interview on social media platform X. Musk endorsed the Republican for president on July 13.
Musk's support for Trump is happening while Tesla Inc. benefits from the policies of Joe Biden and the Democrats. Among them are EV subsidies and the longtime sale of regulatory credits to legacy competitors. These green initiatives created billions of green dollars over the years for Tesla and Musk.
This story in our Daily 5 report today lays out Musk's contradictions about Trump, but doesn't detail Trump's contradictions about Musk. As president, Trump embraced and protected Musk even though he opposed policies and regulations that boost Tesla's core EV business.
"He's one of our great geniuses, and we have to protect our genius," Trump said of Musk in January 2020.
On other topics, today's Daily 5 has a compelling story on the future of solid-state batteries for EVs. The big question: When will these batteries be ready to scale up for mass production? While we're on the subject of batteries, we have a related story about various government efforts to prevent fires from lithium ion batteries.
And finally, the latest installment of our exclusive Future Product Pipeline feature is out with a broad look at European brands, such as Volkswagen, Volvo and Jaguar Land Rover. We'll be highlighting VW's portfolio tomorrow.
That's it for now. Have a great rest of your day!
