Packard bows to the V-8 wave The story of how Packard transitioned from a straight-eight to a V-8. Packard's straight-eight preference in the 1920s was a dominating influence among luxury car makers. The choice in that bygone era was based on reasons of simplicity, economy of lesser moving parts than a V-8 engine, ease of assembly and power. The likes of other adherents, such as Duesenberg, cast an additional luxury aura around the inline configuration. Still, from the late 1930s onward, Packard's history was practically pricked and plagued by a growing urge to relinquish its inline for the more modern V-8 format that dominated high-end sales in the early post-World War II era. CARTERSVILLE, GA - The Savoy Automobile Museum in Cartersville, GA announced the opening of their newest temporary exhibit, Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum Part 1*. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum preserves the history of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indianapolis 500. Since 1956, the museum's collection has grown from a modest display of 12 cars to become one of the world's premier collections of racing automobiles and artifacts—with more than 55,000 artifacts and over 300 vehicles. As they look to the future, the museum is currently closed for a complete renovation of its facilities. This has allowed the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum and Savoy to collaborate on a two-part exhibition. Part One features a selection of special cars that are unique enough to have found their way into the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum's collection. The exhibit is open through September 29, 2024.
